Job summary

The Ohio State University’s PAAR Facility seeks a Research Animal Care Specialist to support high-containment animal care and research operations on the CFAES Wooster Campus. You will oversee bovine, porcine, and avian welfare, assist with project setup, and manage waste streams and biosafety compliance.

The role requires working in BSL-3/BSL-3Ag environments, with responsibilities spanning hands-on animal care, experimental support, and meticulous documentation to ensure audit-ready records.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Technology, Biological Sciences, or a related field required.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field preferred.
• 2+ years of relevant experience in animal husbandry working with bovine, porcine, and avian species within a research environment, including direct experience under IACUC-approved protocols.
• 4–6 years of experience in high-containment livestock management preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide daily care, feeding, watering, and health monitoring for research animals in high-containment settings.
• Lead setup of animal housing, pens, and study supplies; execute project closeout protocols.
• Assist with animal restraint, sampling, health observations, and experimental procedures with high-consequence pathogens.
• Maintain strict adherence to IACUC protocols and report concerns to veterinary leadership.
• Maintain logs of animal care, project closeouts, equipment validation, and biosafety records.
• Track supplies, PPE, feed, bedding, and sanitation chemicals.
