Job summary

The Ohio State University seeks a Research Animal Care Specialist for the PAAR Facility, located on the CFAES Wooster Campus, to provide direct animal care and research support in BSL-3 environments. You will manage husbandry, study setup, and closeout activities for bovine, porcine, and avian species.

Daily duties include observing animal health, coordinating with principal investigators, and ensuring strict biosafety and IACUC protocol adherence in a high-containment setting.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Technology, Biological Sciences, or a related field required.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field preferred.
• 2+ years of relevant experience in animal husbandry working with bovine, porcine, and avian species within a research environment, including direct experience under IACUC-approved protocols.
• Experience working in high-containment livestock management and adherence to biosafety requirements.
• Ability to maintain meticulous logs and ensure audit-ready records per IACUC and Select Agent guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Provide daily care, feeding, watering, and health monitoring for research animals (bovine, porcine, avian) in high-containment settings.
• Lead setup of animal housing, pens, and study-specific supplies; execute project closeout and decontamination protocols.
• Assist with animal restraint, sampling, health observations, and experimental procedures involving high-consequence pathogens.
• Manage research waste streams, autoclave sterilization, and equipment validation.
• Maintain logs, biosafety incident reports, and SOP adherence; communicate with Attending Veterinarian and compliance committees.
• Support facility maintenance, waste decontamination, inventory, and emergency response needs.
