Job summary

MoDOT's Willow Springs team is seeking a Bridge Maintenance Worker to perform routine and emergency repairs on bridges in the state highway system under general supervision. MoDOT will place candidates at entry, intermediate, or senior levels based on skills, with CAREER-LADDER opportunities for advancement.

The role requires physical stamina, a valid CDL with tanker endorsement, and the ability to pass fitness and respirator tests.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED/HiSET.
• Valid driver’s license.
• CDL Class B with tanker endorsement and interstate status required within 60 days of hire.
• Must pass yearly cardiopulmonary function test and respirator fit tests.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine and emergency repairs to bridges, including concrete bridge repairs and structural steel repairs, painting and sealing bridge caps, and deck repair/replacement.
• Paints structural steel bridges using scaffolding, etc., and prepares surfaces for painting.
• Assists in preventative maintenance on bridges in the state highway system.
• Sets up traffic control devices and flags within work zones.
• Operates vehicles and equipment to transport materials and crew to job sites; performs basic vehicle maintenance.

This position is eligible for a temporary emergency operations adjustment of $3 to $6 per hour, depending on the area of operation, when handling winter/emergency operations activities.

• Paints structural steel bridges, including hanging scaffolding, cleaning and preparing bridge surfaces for painting, and mixing and applying paint using conventional or airless paint sprayers and related equipment.
• Assists in preventative maintenance functions on bridges in the state highway system.
• Sets up traffic control devices such as signs, cones, and flags; flags traffic for work zones.
• Operates vehicles and equipment to transport materials and crew to job sites; cleans and performs preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED/HiSET
• Valid driver’s license
• A passing grade on the written portion of the commercial driver’s license (CDL) exam is required prior to hire date. Must pass the driving portion of the CDL exam with tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions (Class B), and interstate status (either Excepted Interstate [EI] or NonExcepted Interstate [NI]) within 60 days of hire.
• Employee will be required to pass a cardiopulmonary function test yearly, attend training on the use of respirators, and pass a respirator fit test every six months.
• Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical-physical examination.

Special Working Conditions:

• Job requires significant physical stamina and endurance.
• Job requires exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
• Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
