Bridge Maintenance Workers are responsible for the construction, alteration, maintenance and repair of structural parts of bridges, culverts and related structures; and perform other related duties.
Examples Of Knowledge And Abilities
Knowledge of
- Operation and care of light trucks and other motorized equipment
- Tools and materials commonly used in the construction and repair of structural woodwork, steel and concrete structures
- General Safety Orders and Constructions Safety Orders as issued by the Division of Industrial Safety
Ability to
- Learn to perform semi-skilled and skilled work required in the construction and repair of timber, steel and concrete structures
- Operate light trucks and small construction equipment
- Operate jack hammers, rock drills, power saws, and drills and other tools
- Maintain tools, supplies and equipment in proper condition;
- Follow oral and written instructions
Employment Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Two years of experience in road construction or maintenance work involving carpentry, steel, or concrete.
Note: The word "experience" referenced in the minimum qualifications must mean full-time paid experience unless the job announcement states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements.
Special Requirements
License Required: Possession of a valid California Drivers license, Class C, will be required prior to appointment.
An employee in this class must possess a Class B California Drivers license within 90 days of appointment.
Physical Requirements: Incumbents must be able to perform heavy manual labor, including digging ditches and lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of objects weighing up to 100 pounds unassisted, and in excess of 100 pounds with the aid of helpers.
Note: Candidates must be able and willing to work at considerable elevations of land or water. Including working from suspended scaffolds, in all kinds of weather, and under hazardous conditions. Incumbents are subject to emergency or on-call work at other than normal duty hours.
Note: Failure to maintain the appropriate valid California Drivers license constitutes cause for termination from the class in accordance with Civil Service Rule 11.4.
Probationary Period
The probationary period for this classification is
six (6) months.

FORMULA RATE EXAMINATION (Weighted 100%)
All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications by the cut-off date will have their Supplemental Questionnaire scored in the Formula Rate Examination.
This examination will evaluate the relevance, level, recency, progression and quality of candidate's education, training and experience. The candidate's application or other materials will not be included in this examination. Therefore, the candidate's responses to the supplemental questionnaire should be thorough, detailed and complete. The score from the Formula Rate Examination will determine the ranking on the eligible/employment list for this job.
All candidates competing in the testing process will receive written notice of their examination results by email. Notices can also be accessed in their governmentjobs.com inbox. Applicants achieving a passing score will be placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test score attained from the examination.
