Salary Grade: NC11 Salary Range: $43,738.00 – $76,542.00

This is an advanced level in-depth safety inspection position serving as the Team Leader of a 2-person bridge inspection team. The team conducts inspections on all types of structures within a specific geographical area of the state. Work is performed outdoors at considerable heights, with exposure to snakes, spiders, insects, and poisonous plants. Safety shoes are required as a condition of employment. The work location is in Chatham and surrounding counties, based out of Siler City.

The responsibilities include conducting in-depth inspections on bridges, light standards, culverts, pipes, sign supports, and overhead walkways. The role involves preparing detailed reports on conditions found during inspections, which are used to evaluate the structural integrity and load-bearing capacity of structures. Additional duties involve training new inspectors, scheduling, and planning team activities according to bridge priorities. Fieldwork may involve hazardous situations such as traffic congestion, working on slopes, climbing high steel structures, working in confined spaces, and working above water on scaffolds or cranes at heights. The position also manages office duties including record-keeping for payroll, progress reports, inventory control, and equipment maintenance. It involves contact with other DOT personnel, state agencies, and researchers as necessary.

Applicants must submit an application that demonstrates the following:

  • Completion of NBIS Two Week Bridge Inspection Course (FWHA-NHI-130055)
  • Experience with Topside Bridge Inspection including bridges, pipes, signs, and culverts
  • Experience with Bridge Inspection Equipment such as Hydra Platforms, Man Lifts, Snooper Trucks, and Boats
  • Proficiency in Word and Excel
  • Experience in drafting, sketching, and report writing

Additional Expectations:

Must have completed the NBIS Bridge Inspection Course.

Note: Some state job postings indicate qualification through an "equivalent combination of education and experience." You may qualify via years of education, experience, or a combination of both. Refer to oshr.nc.gov/experience-guide for details.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • An Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology from an accredited institution and four (4) years of relevant experience, or
  • A high school diploma or GED and five (5) years of relevant experience, or
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience.

Additionally, successful completion of FHWA-approved comprehensive bridge inspection and/or tunnel inspection training is required for above-water Team Leaders.

For Underwater Applications: Advanced SCUBA diving certification from a recognized certifying body such as NAUI or PADI, and 100 hours of verifiable underwater diving experience (e.g., log entries).
