Job description

This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits, competitive salaries, and many career development opportunities.

Salary Grade: NC11 Salary Range: $43,738.00 – $76,542.00

This is an advanced-level, in-depth safety inspection position serving as the Team Leader of a 2-person bridge inspection team. The team conducts inspections on all types of structures within a specific geographical area of the state. Work is performed outdoors at considerable heights, with exposure to snakes, spiders, insects, and poisonous plants. Safety shoes are required as a condition of employment. The work location is in Chatham and surrounding counties, based in Siler City.

The responsibilities include carrying out detailed inspections on bridges, light standards, culverts, pipes, sign supports, and overhead walkways. The position involves preparing reports on conditions found during inspections, which are used to evaluate the structural integrity and load-support capability of structures. Additional duties include training new inspectors, scheduling, and planning the team’s activities in accordance with bridge priorities. Work will primarily be in the counties where structures are located, with some travel to other counties as needed. The fieldwork involves hazardous situations such as traffic congestion, working on slopes, climbing high steel, working in confined spaces, and working above water on scaffolds or using a snooper crane at heights. The role also encompasses office duties like record-keeping for payroll, progress reports, inventory, and equipment maintenance. The position requires interaction with other DOT personnel, state agencies, and researchers.

Applicants must submit an application that demonstrates the following:

  • Completion of NBIS Two Week Bridge Inspection Course (FWHA-NHI-130055)
  • Experience with topside bridge inspection, including bridges, pipes, signs, and culverts
  • Experience with bridge inspection equipment such as Hydra Platforms, man lifts, snooper trucks, and boats
  • Proficiency in Word and Excel
  • Experience in drafting, sketching, and report writing

Additional Expectations:

***Must have completed the NBIS Bridge Inspection Course***

Note: Some state job postings allow qualification through an "equivalent combination of education and experience." You may qualify through either education, experience, or a combination of both. See oshr.nc.gov/experience-guide for details.

Qualifications include:

  • An associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology from an accredited institution and four (4) years of relevant experience, or
  • A high school diploma or GED and five (5) years of relevant experience, or
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience.

Successfully completing FHWA-approved comprehensive bridge and/or tunnel inspection training is required for above-water team leaders.

For underwater applications: An advanced SCUBA certification from a recognized agency (e.g., NAUI, PADI) and 100 hours of verifiable underwater diving experience are required.
