Qualifications

  • BS in Civil or Structural Engineering from ABET-accredited program.
  • 0–4 years bridge inspection engineering experience.
  • Valid driver’s license with clean record.
  • Ability to travel nationwide up to 40%.
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Proactive, adaptable problem-solver with entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Physical ability to lift 60 lbs. and work at heights.
  • Proficiency in MS Office; experience with bridge software preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Work with Professional Engineers, Engineers-in-Training, and Technicians on NBIS/SNBI bridge inspections.
  • Coordinate schedules, resources, field activities, and inspection report summaries.
  • Perform structural calculations and load ratings for existing bridges.

Advance the safety of critical infrastructure while developing your engineering expertise as a Bridge Inspection Engineer at Burgess & Niple. In this role, you'll work alongside Professional Engineers, Engineers-In-Training, and Technicians to inspect bridges of all sizes, combining fieldwork with technical analysis and design calculations to help preserve bridges across the U.S.. You'll collaborate with diverse teams to support inspection schedules, ensure regulatory compliance, and perform structural evaluations, all while growing your skills through mentorship and contributing to projects nationwide.

What You'll Do:

  • Work with multidisciplinary teams of Professional Engineers, Engineers-In-Training, and Technicians on bridge inspection projects across the country according to the NBIS (National Bridge Inspection Standards) and SNBI (Specifications for the National Bridge Inventory)
  • Collaborate with engineers and technicians to develop schedules, allocate resources, carry out field work to complete bridge inspections, and summarize findings in inspection reports
  • Perform structural calculations and load ratings of existing bridges
  • Maintain current knowledge of various state DOT and federal inspection protocols and ensure compliance with all regulations
  • Work side-by-side with technical rope access experts to inspect bridges and structures of all sizes. Field work often involves traveling to various project sites across the region, which typically includes overnight trips
  • Travel extensively (up to 40%) throughout the U.S. to support diverse bridge and structure inspection projects

Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • 0 – 4 years of bridge inspection engineering experience
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving history
  • Ability to travel nationwide up to 40% of the time
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Adaptable and self-motivated with an entrepreneurial mindset as well as a proactive approach to problem solving
  • Physical capability to lift and carry 60 lbs. of gear and withstand high levels of physical exertion
  • Comfortable working at heights using proper safety equipment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and/or MicroStation required; experience with AASHTOWare, BrM, BrR, AssetWise or other bridge inspection and design/rating software preferred
  • NHI/FHWA Bridge Inspection Courses and/or SPRAT Certification is a plus
