Job summary

Washington State Department of Transportation’s Bridge & Structures Office in Tumwater is seeking a Bridge Engineer 3 to lead Under Bridge Inspection Truck operations and co-inspections on state highway bridges. The role supports federally mandated inspections and ensures bridge safety and reliability through hands-on inspection, testing, and planning.

Candidates must meet evolving competency levels, including FHWA/NSTM training, UBIT operation, and maintenance, with in-training progression

Qualifications

• Bridge Engineer 1: core communication, organization, time management, and basic UBIT operation.
• Bridge Engineer 2: adds training in FHWA-approved bridge inspection and NBIS-related skills.
• Bridge Engineer 3: includes advanced inspection planning, logistics coordination, and advanced maintenance skills.

Responsibilities

• Drive and operate Under Bridge Inspection Trucks and access equipment for close-up bridge inspections.
• Assist with in-service bridge inspections per FHWA/WSDOT requirements using UBITs, rope access, bucket trucks and scaffolding.
• Perform non-destructive testing (ultrasonic, magnetic particle, dye penetrant) on complex structures.
• Assist with inspection planning, assess bridge condition, and identify needed repairs.
• Perform emergency response and standby/on-call duties as required.
• Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair UBITs and related inspection equipment.
• Provide training to staff on UBIT operations and related gear.
