Job description

Position Profile

This position will work within our Railroad Market in the Bridge Discipline on rail bridge projects, as well as on bridge projects in our Infrastructure Market. The role involves providing design and construction engineering support for a broad range of structural engineering assignments, potentially including building and industrial projects.

A Day in the Life of a Structural Designer at Hanson

Here's a snapshot of what you would do in this role:

  1. Assist and participate in the design of bridges and structures
  2. Assist and participate in the inspection of in-service bridges and structures
  3. Conduct analysis and design, prepare specifications, details, and construction plans
  4. Assist and participate in construction engineering
  5. Conduct observation and documentation of construction activity
  6. Evaluate construction for compliance with contract documents
  7. Interpret plans to understand design intent
  8. Perform other duties as assigned
What We're Looking For

We believe the following qualifications will help you succeed in this role:

Technical Skills:
  • Experience with MicroStation preferred
  • Experience with MS Office Suite preferred
  • Experience with AutoCAD, LPILE, and RISA 3-D is a plus
Soft Skills:
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to engineers, clients, and stakeholders
  • Ability to build effective relationships with internal and external clients
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively to solve problems and learn new skills
  • Interest in diverse assignments
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering
  • 18 credit hours of structural engineering coursework, including design project credits if applicable
  • Ability to sit for the 16-hour NCEES Structural exam
  • Registration as an Engineer Intern (EI) with the Illinois Division of Professional Regulation or equivalent
  • Proven academic excellence
  • Recent graduate or up to 3 years of experience (salary based on experience)
  • Master's degree in structural engineering preferred
