Job summary

VDOT is seeking a Bridge Engineer to design and analyze structures for new construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation projects. You will ensure compliance with AASHTO and internal standards, prepare plans and drawings, and manage multiple tasks within scope and schedule.

The role requires strong analytical skills, effective communication, and experience with structural design principles. Collaboration with internal teams, contractors, and agencies is essential for project success.

Qualifications

• Ability to draw rational conclusions and develop solutions from analysis; make independent decisions; and manage multiple assignments.
• Ability to estimate quantities and costs of materials.
• Ability to interpret construction plans and design specifications.
• Ability to produce structural design plans and notes.
• Ability to review and administer consultant design contracts.
• Experience applying civil engineering principles related to structural engineering.

Responsibilities

• Design and detail structures and bridges for new construction, maintenance and rehabilitation projects.
• Check statically determinate and indeterminate structures to meet alignment, dimension, strength and economic requirements.
• Prepare analyses, reports, and recommendations based on engineering determinations.
• Provide engineering support and consultation related to engineering program areas.
• Prepare bridge plans, sketches, and structural drawings.
• Investigate condition of existing structures and assist in proposed rehabilitations.
