Job summary

St. Clair County (IL) seeks a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor to provide basic breastfeeding information, encouragement, and support to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers enrolled in WIC services. The role uses personal experience to assist families and promote the Loving Support curriculum.

Responsibilities include managing caseloads, conducting individual and group sessions, and referring mothers per established procedures. Flexibility to participate in outreach and special projects is required.

Qualifications

• Must have personally breastfed at least one baby within the last 5 years.
• Enrolled in Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program, past or present.
• Successful completion of the “Loving Support” training curriculum for the WIC program.
• Basic computer skills including Word and Outlook.

Responsibilities

• The Peer Counselor must have breastfed at least one baby (within the last 5 years) but does not need to currently be breastfeeding.
• Manages an assigned caseload of pregnant and breastfeeding mothers and makes routine periodic contacts with all clients assigned in accordance with program and agency policy and procedure.
• Provides basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers individually and in group settings in accordance with the Loving Support curriculum, and program and agency policy and procedures.
• Refers mothers appropriately when needed and in accordance with established program and agency protocols.
• Assists supervisor and staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through outreach, special projects and duties as assigned.
