Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Public Health is seeking a TEMPORARY HOURLY position under general supervision to promote breastfeeding for pregnant women and to support breastfeeding mothers enrolled in the WIC program.

The candidate should meet the State Minimum Requirements (high school diploma and related human or social services experience) and will conduct outreach via clinic visits, calls, texts, and emails, while maintaining confidentiality of client records.

Qualifications

• High school diploma and experience in human or social services.
• Ability to support breastfeeding moms in the WIC program.
• Experience with program records and confidentiality is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Contact WIC breastfeeding moms by clinic, phone, text messages, emails, letters or hospital visits within 1-7 days and 8-14 days after delivery to provide breastfeeding support. Use the script for after-delivery contacts as a guide.
• Make a contact by clinic, phone calls, text messages, emails, letters or hospitals once a week for the next three weeks after birth and a minimum of once a month thereafter as long as the mom is breastfeeding. Use the script for after-delivery contacts as a guide.
• Refer breastfeeding moms/infants with complex breastfeeding situations to the breastfeeding coordinator.
• Make prenatal contacts at 16, 20, 24, 27, 31, 35, 39, 40 and 41 weeks gestation using Natural Nutrition resources. Use Script for Prenatal Contacts as a guide.
• Keep accurate records of all contacts made with WIC mothers. Maintain strict confidentiality of client information.
