UCSF Nowakowski Lab in the Department of Neurological Surgery seeks a Junior Specialist to work with fresh human brain tissue, applying genetic tools (AAV and CRISPR) in ex vivo cortical slices. You will coordinate tissue procurement with neurosurgeons and pathology teams, troubleshoot culture conditions, and contribute to manuscripts and grants.

This is a unique translational opportunity. The role offers hands-on experience with primary human neural tissue and advanced genetic platforms,

Competenze

• Baccalaureate degree in neuroscience, biology, bioengineering, molecular biology, or a related field; OR at least four years of research experience
• Familiarity with viral vectors, CRISPR, and tissue culture techniques required or highly desirable
• Strong communication skills for collaborating with clinicians and diverse lab teams

Mansioni

• Receive, process, and culture fresh human brain tissue and establish organotypic brain slice cultures
• Produce and transduce AAV vectors in ex vivo human brain slices
• Validate viral tropism, transduction efficiency, and cell-type specificity using imaging and single-cell readouts
• Coordinate tissue procurement workflows with neurosurgical teams and pathology staff
• Draft SOPs and contribute to manuscript and grant writing
