Job summary

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is hiring Border Patrol Agents (BPA) across multiple grades to protect the United States at the borders.

The role emphasizes law enforcement duties, inspection of documents, surveillance, and incident response, with a strong emphasis on safety and adherence to federal regulations. New agents may receive recruitment incentives up to $20,000 and retention incentives up to $30,000, plus extensive federal benefits and a Thrift Savings Plan.

Qualifications

• One year of general work experience demonstrating leadership, decision-making, and composure in stressful situations.
• Bachelor's degree or successful completion of a full four-year course of study in any field from an accredited college or university.
• A combination of general work experience AND successfully completed college education.
• Note: with prior law enforcement or military experience, qualification at higher grades (GL-9/GS-11) may apply.

Responsibilities

• Detecting and questioning people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws and inspecting documents and possessions to determine citizenship or violations.
• Preventing and apprehending undocumented noncitizens and smugglers near borders by maintaining surveillance and using equipment.
• Interpreting and following tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry or contraband.
• Performing farm checks, building checks, traffic checks, city patrols, and transportation checks.
• Patrolling the international boundary and coastal waterways using government assets to fulfill the CBP mission.
