The New York Times is seeking a visionary, deeply collaborative editor to lead its Books coverage. You will oversee the Books desk, shaping the Book Review’s editorial strategy across our website, app, newsletters, audio, video and social platforms.

The ideal candidate has 15+ years in journalism, 5+ years in leadership, deep knowledge of publishing and contemporary literature, and a proven track record of guiding a fast-paced digital newsroom. This is an in-office role in New York.

Qualifications

• 15+ years in journalism or cultural criticism.
• 5+ years in a senior leadership role.
• Deep knowledge of publishing and literary culture.
• Proven experience guiding digital newsroom transformations.
• Strong editing and prose sharpening skills.
• Experience navigating complex organizations.

Responsibilities

• Define and execute the overarching editorial strategy for books coverage.
• Ensure coverage reflects diverse voices and perspectives.
• Oversee book review selection and maintain authoritative voice.
• Direct major projects like the 10 Best Books of the Year and 100 Notable Books.
• Produce industry coverage on publishing economics and trends.
• Collaborate with product, audio, video, and design teams across formats.
• Use audience insights to optimize headlines and publishing schedules.
• Manage and mentor editors, staff critics, and reporters.
• Uphold journalistic independence and mission.
• Report to a Masthead Editor.
