The New York Times Opinion department is seeking a visionary, high‑level editorial leader to join its ranks. This role is designed for a sophisticated editor with a proven track record of shaping world‑class journalism, managing high‑profile talent and driving the cultural conversation. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in narrative development and a keen eye for talent, specifically focused on elevated commentary and long‑form storytelling.

This position requires a rare blend of intellectual rigor, creative ambition and the tactical skill necessary to edit the world’s leading columnists and thinkers.

This is an in‑office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities
  • Conceptualize and execute ambitious editorial projects, pieces and series that go beyond the daily news cycle to provide lasting insight
  • Manage and edit a portfolio of New York Times columnists, providing high‑touch guidance on narrative arc, voice and argument
  • Partner across design, multimedia and audience teams to ensure that Opinion’s most important work reaches its widest possible impact
  • Identify, recruit, and develop new voices to expand the breadth and depth of Opinion coverage, ensuring a diverse and provocative range of perspectives
  • Oversee the lifecycle of commentary from pitch to publication, ensuring every piece meets the highest standards of intellectual honesty and literary excellence
  • Mentor junior editors and staff, fostering a culture of rigorous editing, creative risk‑taking and professional growth
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to set the strategic editorial direction for the department, anticipating major news cycles and cultural shifts
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
  • You will report to the Opinion Editorial Director.
Basic Qualifications
  • 8+ years of experience in senior editorial roles at a major national publication
  • A deep portfolio of editing work that has shaped public discourse or won major industry accolades
  • Proven ability to edit high‑profile writers, columnists and public intellectuals with sensitivity and authority
  • Proven talent for transforming complex ideas into compelling, accessible, and urgent narratives
Preferred Qualifications
  • Sophisticated understanding of the digital media landscape and the evolving nature of opinion journalism
  • A robust network within the literary, academic and journalistic communities
  • Experience managing cross‑functional teams
Employment Details

Location: New York City (in‑office, 4 days per week; remote flexibility per department)

Pay: $160,000 – $180,000 USD. Eligible for variable pay such as annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits include medical, dental and vision coverage, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), company‑matching 401(k) plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs.
