Job summary

King & George seeks a temporary Boiler Tender/Stationary Engineer to operate and maintain stationary mechanical equipment, including steam boilers and chillers, to provide utilities, heating and cooling. The role may require more than one shift and overtime as needed.

Responsibilities include monitoring gauges, recording conditions, adjusting controls, conducting maintenance, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

• Knowledgeable in industrial HVAC systems and gas fired boilers.
• Experience troubleshooting and repairing electronic, pneumatic, and mechanical control devices.
• Familiar with direct expansion, chilled and heated water systems, and boiler operation.

Responsibilities

Position Summary

This position may be required to work any of three shifts. Operates and maintains stationary mechanical equipment such as steam boilers, and Chillers to provide utilities, heating and cooling, by performing the following duties.

Responsibilities

• Reads meters and gauges or automatic recording devices at specified intervals to verify operating conditions.
• Records data such as temperature of equipment, hours of operations, fuel consumed, temperature or pressure, water levels, analysis of flue gases
• Adjusts manual controls or overrides automatic controls to bring equipment into recommended or prescribed operating ranges, switch to backup equipment or systems, or to shut down equipment.
• Visually inspected equipment at periodic intervals to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment, or lubrication.
• Maintains equipment by tightening fittings, repacking bearings, replacing packing glands, gaskets, valves, recorders, and gauges, and cleaning or replacing burners or other components.
• Oils and lubricates equipment.
• Performs water titration tests and adds chemical additives, such as water softener, into treatment tank to prevent scale buildup and to clean boiler lines.
• Records operation and maintenance actions taken during shift in operator’s logbook.
• Accomplishes periodic inspections, recurring maintenance requirements and associated documentation as assigned. Maintains systems to conform to written guidance and applicable changes.
• Responds to emergency and urgent after-hours service calls. Works job assignments, research and requisitions materials, and prepares necessary documents and reports.
• Requires working scheduled and unscheduled overtime work including areas other than respective skilled trade.

• Must have ability to meet the requirements for issuance of a computer network account (favorable National Agency Check and successfully complete computer security training)

Education and/or Experience

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
• Three (3) years related experience in healthcare facilities.
• Any federal or state required licenses and certifications.
• Knowledgeable in industrial HVAC systems and gas fired boilers with emphasis on troubleshooting and repairs of electronic, pneumatic, and mechanical control devices.
• Knowledgeable in direct expansion, chilled and heated water systems, including but not limited to chillers of any size, boilers up to 5 MMBTU/hr, hydronic hot/cold water distribution systems, cooling towers, and their controls and components.

Language Skills

• Ability to read and speak English
• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
• Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills

• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability

• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Required Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

All tradespersons (i.e., stationary engineers, electricians, HVAC mechanics, etc.) that operate and/or perform maintenance on the systems and equipment in the Central Plant have received adequate training from the systems/equipment manufacturer (or from a vendor qualified by the manufacturer) and possess a current journeyman's license.

• Journeyman card for respective trade provided through a recognized apprentice program, State certification.
• Current or expired state contractor's license for the respective trade,
• Evidence of passing the International Code Council (ICC) or International Standards Organization (ISO) national journeyman or master certification exam (i.e., electrician, HVAC mechanic, plumber)
• Nationally recognized certification program
• Documented military journeyman level or higher experience in the respective trade, as identified on a DD214.
• Incumbent must have or obtain a NIULPE License or Government approved equal in a timely manner.
