The position is located in the Boiler Plant Unit at the Edward Hines, Jr. Veteran's Hospital, Hines, IL. The primary purpose of this position is to provide steam and hot water required for sanitation, infection control, and a healthful environment for healthcare delivery, operated safely and economically, recognizing the potential for pressure vessel and/or furnace explosion.

The incumbent is responsible for the operation, adjustment, and minor repair of four high-pressure steam boilers, potable water pumping and chlorinating equipment, and auxiliary boiler plant equipment such as water and oil pumps, steam turbines, air compressors, and more. The boilers are rated at 50,000 lbs. of steam per hour at 125 psig. The typical operation involves running two or three boilers to generate over 100,000 lbs. of steam per hour, and pumping about 1,000,000 gallons of raw water daily.
Rotating shifts. Due to the mission of the VA, the hospital must be staffed continuously, including holidays, weekends, and after-hours, with possible emergency call-backs.
Frequent work in confined spaces around boilers, requiring moderate to strenuous effort, long walking, standing, climbing, bending, and lifting up to 40 pounds unassisted.
Evidence of training or experience demonstrating ability to perform the duties is required. No specific training length is mandated. Applicants will be rated per OPM standards. Key job elements include the ability to work independently, interpret instructions, and maintain tools and equipment.
