The Utility Technician job is an entry-level position and a core component of our workforce as one of the world’s largest steel producers. The Utility Technician operates equipment and performs tasks that support various production and service units. As a Utility Technician, you will perform general labor duties, including the use of torches, shovels, and other hand tools. You will also operate some mobile equipment in a heavy industrial environment. The Utility Technician also supports and assists in the maintenance of plant equipment.
Job Responsibilities:
- Control Room Operator serves as both a Control Room Operator and Outside Operator if needed.
- Assist with the start-up, operation, and shutdown of all equipment, including turbines, generators, boilers, pumps, fans, and other plant systems.
- Ensure all equipment, including the combustion turbine, Once Through Steam Generator, steam turbine, generators, and all plant auxiliaries, operate safely and efficiently.
- Complete and maintain accurate daily logbook documentation and other plant recordkeeping, including electrical output, steam output, emissions, fuel, and water consumption.
- Conduct periodic reviews of logs and records to ensure lockout/tagout procedures, equipment status, and administrative systems are effective.
- Participate in the maintenance of plant manuals, technical references, prints, diagrams, and preventive/predictive maintenance records.
- Proficiently operate all plant equipment and proactively monitor systems.
- Work in various mill areas, which may involve environmental conditions such as heat, cold, dirt, grease, wetness, and noise.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Ability to work rotating 8-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays.
- Overtime as needed.
- Strict adherence to safety procedures and guidelines, including wearing protective gear.
- Punctuality, attendance, and self-direction are essential.
- Must pass pre-employment assessment.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience operating high-pressure natural boilers.
- Experience with GE Frame 6B combustion turbines.
- Experience with GE back pressure extraction steam turbines (19MW).
- Experience operating high-purity water demineralizer systems.
- Experience with softened water systems.
- Knowledge of multi-media filter systems.
- General knowledge of Ovation DCS and Mark V turbine control systems.
- Understanding of 138kV transmission systems and electrical switchgear systems.
