Job description

The Durham Rape Crisis Centre is seeking a Board Director to join our governance team. The role involves approximately 4 hours per month, with a term of 3 years, and is conducted remotely. Candidates should have a post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field, or equivalent experience, with preferences for those with backgrounds in governance, non-profit/charitable sectors, or experience as a board director. Backgrounds in business, finance, law, HR, marketing, or communications are assets. Passion for working or volunteering with survivors of sexual violence is essential.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Overall governance of the organization
  2. Formulating and revising mission, vision, and values
  3. Developing and evaluating strategic plans
  4. Monitoring organizational performance and financial health
  5. Ensuring legal and regulatory compliance
  6. Supporting the Executive Director and succession planning
  7. Assessing risks and establishing governance structures
  8. Recruiting and training Board members
Individual Director Responsibilities:
  1. Act honestly and in the best interests of DRCC
  2. Attend meetings and participate actively
  3. Abide by policies and declare conflicts of interest
  4. Support decisions of the Board and maintain confidentiality
Volunteer Conditions:
  • Attend virtual monthly meetings and participate in committees and events
  • Engage in governance and volunteer training opportunities
  • Interact with staff, volunteers, and stakeholders
  • Complete a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
