Backroads of Appalachia is seeking a VISTA in Kentucky to build relationships with communities, organizations, events, and partners across KY, VA, and WV. The role focuses on creating sustainable systems for regional engagement and economic opportunity through grassroots collaboration.

You will develop tools for organizing events, strengthen regional initiatives, and demonstrate the impact of engagement on local economies during a year-long service term.

Qualifications

• Some college or equivalent required.
• English language proficiency.
• Interest in community development and regional engagement.
• Ability to travel within the service region.

Responsibilities

• Develop an understanding of the communities, organizations, events, and resources in the service region.
• Develop tools and systems to organize and sustain regional events.
• Strengthen initiatives by cultivating grassroots relationships with locally owned businesses and organizations.
• Increase participation by connecting organizers, businesses, volunteers, residents, and visitors.
• Demonstrate how events contribute to local economic activity and goals.
• Create systems turning one-time participation into long-term regional relationships.
• Ensure systems and relationships endure beyond the service term.

Backroads of Appalachia is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a passion for the Appalachian Region. Through motorsports-focused tourism, we work to drive economic development and reduce poverty in the region through job training, and opportunity in the impoverished areas of Appalachia. The VISTA will focus on building relationships at the local and regional level and identifying creative ways for businesses and partners to participate in events and initiatives. This may include modest financial contributions as well as in-kind goods, services, volunteer support, supplies, food, equipment, discounts, or other resources. The overall goal is to build a stronger network of regional partners and create repeatable systems that make events and initiatives more sustainable while increasing exposure and economic opportunities for rural Appalachian communities.

Member Duties

• Develop an understanding of the communities, organizations, businesses, events, and resources throughout the service region.
• Develop tools and systems that make regional events easier to organize, support, replicate, and sustain.
• Strengthen events and regional initiatives by cultivating grassroots relationships with locally owned businesses and organizations.
• Increase participation in regional events by strengthening connections between organizers, businesses, volunteers, residents, and visitors.
• Develop methods for demonstrating how events and regional engagement contribute to local economic activity and organizational goals.
• Create systems that turn one-time participation into long-term regional relationships.
• Ensure that the systems, relationships, and resources developed during Year 1 can continue beyond the VISTA member's service term.
