Job summary

METROHEALTH MEDICAL CENTER is seeking a Blood Bank Supervisor to oversee all aspects of blood banking operations within our clinical laboratory. The role emphasizes compliance, quality assurance, and team leadership to ensure safe, accurate blood products.

You will collaborate with the Medical Director of the Transfusion Medicine Service, schedule staff, educate personnel, and maintain QA/QC programs to meet CLIA and hospital standards while fostering a collaborative work environment.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience in medical laboratory work with a focus on blood banking or transfusion services.
• Proven supervisory or management experience within a clinical or hospital setting.
• Strong knowledge of CLIA regulations, laboratory compliance standards, and quality management practices.
• Proficiency in laboratory techniques including ELISA, RNA extraction, DNA isolation, PCR, flow cytometry, immunoassays, and other assay methodologies.
• Familiarity with LIS, document management systems, and data management tools.
• Excellent leadership skills with the ability to motivate teams while maintaining high accuracy and safety.
• Knowledge of physiology and anatomy relevant to blood sampling, venipuncture, and specimen processing.

Responsibilities

• Supervise daily blood bank activities, including specimen collection, processing, and storage of blood products in accordance with CLIA regulations and hospital policies.
• Oversee laboratory testing procedures such as blood typing, crossmatching, antibody screening, and compatibility testing utilizing ELISA, flow cytometry, and immunoassays.
• Manage laboratory staff by providing training, mentorship, and performance evaluations to ensure high standards of clinical supervision and team development.
• Maintain rigorous quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) protocols to ensure accuracy and compliance with laboratory standards.
• Ensure proper documentation through document management systems and LIS, including specimen tracking and data collection for clinical trials or research.
• Monitor laboratory equipment maintenance and calibration to uphold optimal performance for hematology, clinical chemistry, and other laboratory tests.
• Implement schedule management strategies to optimize workflow efficiency while ensuring adherence to safety protocols such as aseptic technique and venipuncture procedures.
• Facilitate compliance management by staying current with regulations related to blood banking, laboratory procedures, and medical terminology.
