Job summary

UMass Memorial Health in Worcester, MA, is seeking a Blood Bank Technologist to perform complex testing and prepare blood components for transfusion. This role requires adherence to Blood Bank protocols and ability to interpret results in the context of patient history.

Responsibilities include guiding junior staff, ensuring timely turnaround, maintaining equipment and inventory, and ensuring compliance with quality and safety policies within a busy laboratory setting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from US regionally accredited college/university with biology, chemistry, and math; and successful completion of a US NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Scientist program with MT(ASCP) or MLS(ASCP).
• Bachelor’s degree in Science with at least three years of Blood Bank experience.
• Associate Degree of Medical Laboratory Technology with MLT(ASCP) certification.

Responsibilities

• Follows Blood Bank protocols and performs complex tests for an assigned area and prepares blood components for transfusion.
• Provides guidance and consultation to lower level technologists and technicians on complex test results and standard Blood Bank procedures.
• Interprets clinical test results with patient history to determine appropriate action and transfusion decisions.
• Performs low, moderate and high complexity testing as required.
• Ensures testing meets turnaround times and quality control requirements.
• Maintains inventory and records with FIFO practices and equipment calibration/cleaning.
