The Cancer Biostatistics Shared Resource ( CBSR ) at Huntsman Cancer Institute ( HCI ) of the University of Utah is seeking a staff statistician to carry out statistical analyses in collaboration with cancer investigators.
We are a group of biostatisticians in CBSR engaged in a wide range of collaborations from basic science, high-dimensional multi-omics data analyses, translational research, epidemiology studies, biomarker selection, to clinical trials at HCI . We interact with other data scientists, bioinformaticians, statisticians, epidemiologists, psychometricians, health economists, survey design researchers, and systematic review experts within the campus. Focus research areas include, although not limited to, the design of clinical trials, observational studies, longitudinal and survival analysis, epidemiologic modeling, Bayesian analysis, modern causal inference, biomarkers analyses, statistical genetics and genomics, computational statistics, systematic review methodology, structural equations modeling, and muti-omics analysis.

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT : 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Biostatistician, II: Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) + 4 years or a master’s (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience.
Bachelor’s degree in statistics, biostatistics, data science, or a related field. A master’s or doctoral degree with several years of directly related experience is preferred.
Candidates should have familiarity with standard statistical methods and the ability to apply appropriate statistical approaches to research questions. General programming skills and proficiency in at least one statistical programming language, such as SAS , R, or Python, are preferred, along with the ability to independently learn new programming skills and troubleshoot and solve challenging programming problems.
Experience with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is preferred. The successful candidate should be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, work effectively both independently and collaboratively, and communicate statistical concepts and results clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences. Relevant research or work experience is preferred.
Experience with large language models (LLMs), domain-specific language models, high-performance computing ( HPC ) clusters, or cloud computing environments is highly desirable but not required. Familiarity with the capabilities and limitations of chatbots and other AI-assisted tools, such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, or similar technologies, is also preferred.
Experience with the analysis and integration of high-dimensional multi-omics data, including, but not limited to, genomic, transcriptomic, epigenomic, and microbiome data, is preferred but not required. Familiarity with relevant bioinformatics or statistical workflows, including data preprocessing, quality control, analysis, visualization, and biological interpretation, would be an advantage.
