Job summary

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is seeking an Institutional Biosafety Program Manager to provide strategic and technical leadership for LLNL's biosafety program. You will manage development, implementation, and continuous improvement of biosafety programs supporting biological research and related institutional review activities.

You will work with ES&H leadership, PIs, committees, and DOE to ensure safe, compliant biological research.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in life sciences or equivalent with substantial relevant experience.
• DOE Q-level clearance and U.S. citizenship required.
• Experience leading institutional biosafety programs in a research setting.
• Expert knowledge of biosafety regulations (BMBL, NIH Guidelines, OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens, DOE).
• Experience with biosafety or voting membership on IBC/IRE/IACUC or equivalents.
• Ability to interpret complex regulatory requirements across diverse environments.
• Experience managing resources, projects, budgets, or personnel.
• Excellent communication, facilitation, collaboration, negotiation, and presentation skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead LLNL's institutional biosafety program, policies, and documentation.
• Provide expert guidance on biosafety, biosecurity, and research risks.
• Develop program strategies aligned with mission needs and secure resources.
• Lead risk assessments for new/ongoing biosafety activities and support authorizations.
• Oversee biosafety reviews across BSL-1 to ABSL-3 and ensure compliance with regulations.
• Serve as Institutional Biosafety Officer and participate in governance committees.
• Interface with DOE, USDA, regulators, and oversight bodies.
• Oversee audits, inspections, investigations, and continuous improvement.
