Job summary

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is seeking a Biosafety Functional Area Manager to provide strategic leadership for the institutional biosafety program. You will manage development, implementation, and continuous improvement of biosafety activities supporting biological research and related oversight.

You will collaborate with ES&H leadership, investigators, and committees to ensure safe, compliant operations and will lead risk assessments, biosafety reviews, and program measurements

Qualifications

• Masters degree in biology, microbiology, molecular biology, virology, immunology, or related life sciences field or equivalent combination of education and substantial relevant experience.
• Extensive experience managing or leading institutional biosafety programs in research settings.
• Expert knowledge of biosafety regulations, standards, and guidelines (e.g., BMBL, NIH Guidelines, OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens, DOE requirements).
• Excellent communication, facilitation, collaboration, negotiation, presentation, and conflict-resolution skills.
• Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, requiring U.S. citizenship.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of LLNL's institutional biosafety program.
• Provide expert technical guidance on biosafety, biosecurity, and laboratory operations.
• Develop program strategies, priorities, and resource requirements aligned with Laboratory needs.
• Lead risk assessments for new and ongoing research activities and support development of Biological Use Authorizations.
• Oversee biosafety reviews across BSL-1 to ABSL-3 containment levels and ensure compliance with applicable federal and lab requirements.
• Serve as Institutional Biosafety Officer and participate as voting member of biosafety and animal care committees.
• Build relationships with investigators, managers, staff, and external regulators; benchmark with other laboratories.
• Mentor biosafety professionals and oversee training, data-driven metrics, and program health.
