Job Title: Biomedical Informatics Systems Specialist
Job Summary: Biomedical Informatics Systems Specialist is responsible for providing expert-level guidance and support in the design, analysis, integration, and implementation of complex systems supporting scientific research and biomedical informatics. This role bridges deep subject matter expertise with systems-level thinking, ensuring that software and data infrastructures align with the scientific requirements of biomedical programs. The specialist contributes to high-level decision-making, documentation, and client advisory across project phases, with a focus on domain-driven design and standards-based integration.
Key Responsibilities
Scientific and Systems Expertise
- Provide subject matter expertise in a scientific domain to support advanced systems analysis and informatics implementations.
- Advise project teams and stakeholders on technical approaches and solutions that align with domain-specific scientific and research goals.
- Participate in requirement elicitation and system design processes, offering domain-specific insights that influence software architecture and data modeling.
- Analyze complex biomedical challenges and recommend system-based or terminology-driven solutions to improve interoperability, data quality, and semantic alignment.
Documentation and Communication
- Prepare technical reports, white papers, and scientific documentation to support project deliverables and regulatory compliance.
- Create executive-level briefings, visualizations, and summaries for stakeholders, including charts, graphs, and structured findings.
- Contribute to strategic planning and roadmap sessions for scientific systems development and integration.
Terminology and Ontology Support
- Apply working knowledge of semantic standards and biomedical ontologies to system analysis and terminology mapping tasks.
- Participate in or support the production of terminology resources such as the NCI Metathesaurus, including terminology editing and quality review.
- Utilize tools such as OWL2, Protégé, and description logic frameworks to support content modeling and validation.
Collaboration and Project Involvement
- Work closely with technical teams, project managers, and scientific users to ensure functional requirements are accurately translated into technical implementations.
- Provide guidance during all phases of software development or data systems deployment, especially in areas requiring deep scientific knowledge.
- Mentor junior staff or analysts in understanding the intersection of science and systems.
Qualifications
- A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in a relevant scientific field (e.g., biomedical sciences, public health, bioinformatics).
- Advanced degree (MS, PhD, MD, or equivalent) in a scientific discipline is strongly preferred.
- Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or business plus six (6) years of directly related additional experience may substitute for an advanced degree.
- Strong analytical and communication skills, with demonstrated experience in translating complex scientific concepts into technical documentation and system requirements.
- Familiarity with NCI Metathesaurus production workflows and procedures.
- Experience using terminology editing tools, OWL2, description logic, and Protégé for ontology development.
- Knowledge of major biomedical vocabularies and standards such as SNOMED CT, LOINC, ICD, NCIt, and UMLS.
- Experience working on interdisciplinary teams in biomedical informatics, research computing, or federal health initiatives.
- Excellent collaboration skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with technical and scientific audiences.
- Proactive and curious mindset, with a passion for applying science to solve real-world data and systems challenges.
- Comfortable navigating ambiguity and synthesizing information from scientific literature, standards bodies, and stakeholder input.
