Job summary

Qualifications

• Progress toward a Biomedical or Mechanical Engineering degree is required.
• Junior or above; recent graduates within six months are eligible.
• Prior research experience at an R1 institution is preferred.
• Biomechanical research experience is preferred.
• Publication experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist research engineers with literature review and study design, preparation, and execution.
• Prepare samples, including cadaveric dissections.
• Conduct biomechanical tests (tension, compression, torsion, bending).
• Analyze data with statistical modeling and create graphs.
• Enter data, organize the study database, and maintain records.
• Draft internal reports and manuscripts.

The Biomechanical Research Co-op in Naples, FL will assist the Biomechanical Research team with all phases of in-house cadaveric biomechanical research studies. The successful candidate will apply sound engineering and scientific principles to help study the safety and efficacy of novel surgical techniques. The individual will perform sample preparation, biomechanical tests (e.g., tension, compression, bending), data and statistical analysis, and manuscript preparation. The individual will be detail-oriented, procedural, and have strong verbal and written technical communication skills. This Co-op will run from January 2027 – June 2027. The ideal candidate will have the availability to work 40 hours per week at our Naples, FL facility.

Main Objective

To apply sound engineering and scientific principles to help study the safety and efficacy of novel surgical techniques. The selected Co-op will also assist the biomechanical research team with all phases of in-house cadaveric biomechanical research studies, from initial literature review through manuscript preparation.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

• Assist research engineers with literature review and study design, preparation, and execution.
• Sample preparations, including cadaveric dissections.
• Biomechanical tests, including tension, compression, torsion, and bending test methods.
• Data analysis, including statistical modeling and graphical representations of outcomes.
• Data entry, record keeping, organization, and filtering of the research study database.
• Technical writing of internal reports and manuscripts.

Education And Experience

• Progress towards a college degree in Biomedical or Mechanical Engineering required. A college junior or above preferred. (Recent graduates must be within six months of their graduation date to qualify.)
• Prior research experience at an R1 research institution preferred.
• Biomechanical research experience preferred.
• Publication experience preferred.

Knowledge And Skill Requirements/Specialized Courses And/or Training

• Advanced computer skills required.
• Familiarity with Microsoft applications, including Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel required.
• MATLAB or prior coding experience required.
• Computer-aided design experience (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo) preferred.
• Knowledge of biomechanical testing principles required.
• Anatomy and physiology knowledge preferred.
• Ability to follow written and verbal directions required.

Machine, Tools, And/or Equipment Skills

• Mechanical testing systems (e.g., Instron/MTS) preferred.
• Mechanical workshop tools, including drills, bandsaws, screwdrivers, and wrenches required.
• Basic setup or assembly experience using vises/clamps, nuts, bolts, and screws required.
