Job summary

Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, seeks a part-time Grade Enhancement Mentor (GEM)/tutor to support Biology students. The role emphasizes workshops, small groups, and individual instruction under the Principal Investigator.

As part of the Department of Human and Life Sciences, you will promote academic support across Biology courses, meeting students regularly to clarify learning problems and improve study skills, and coordinating with faculty for effective outcomes.

Qualifications

Bachelor's in a Science related field or Science Education from an accredited institution required; a Master's degree preferred.
One year experience teaching or tutoring, preferably at a college level OR equivalent combination of training and experience which would provide similar knowledge and skills.
Demonstrated knowledge of Word, Powerpoint and Excel.
Knowledge of educational technology expected.
Evidence of appropriate worked-related experience relevant to the position. Demonstrable interest in student success.
The flexibility, skills, and ability to thrive in an environment with ample workloads, changing priorities and deadline pressure.

Responsibilities

Develop and conduct science and other appropriate workshops for students; develop instructional materials in science.
Meets with students on a regular basis to clarify learning problems and improve study skills through one or more of the following techniques.
Facilitation of effective study methods in reviewing class material and predicting test questions.
Discussion of the class text.
Facilitate tutee's formulation of topics and ideas for their class assignments.
