Job summary

Shaw University in Raleigh, NC seeks a part-time grant-supported Grade Enhancement Mentor (GEM)/tutor to provide workshops, small groups, and individual instruction, working with the Department of Human and Life Sciences to support Chemistry students.

The GEM will develop science workshops, meet with students to clarify learning problems, use syllabi and materials, and assist in Chemistry courses while attending grant meetings and coordinating evening or weekend hours as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s in a Science related field or Science Education from an accredited institution required
• One year experience teaching or tutoring, preferably at a college level
• Demonstrated knowledge of Word, PowerPoint and Excel
• Knowledge of educational technology expected
• Evidence of appropriate work-related experience relevant to the position
• Flexibility to handle ample workloads, changing priorities and deadlines

Responsibilities

• Develop and conduct science and other appropriate workshops for students; develop instructional materials in science
• Meets with students on a regular basis to clarify learning problems and improve study skills
• Facilitation of effective study methods and discussion of the class text
• Facilitate tutee’s formulation of topics and ideas for class assignments
• Provide instructional assistance to individuals and small groups in Chemistry courses
• Utilize computers for instructional purposes
• Attend grant meetings as appropriate
• Work hours may include evenings, weekends, and off-campus assignments
• All other duties assigned by the Principal Investigator
