Job summary

Axle seeks a Biological Scientist to join the NIH/NIAID team in Bethesda, MD, delivering specialized translational research support across molecular biology and immunocytochemistry areas. You will design, perform and interpret experiments, maintain meticulous notebooks, and contribute to publications while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance in a dynamic laboratory environment.

The role requires strong record-keeping, data analysis, and collaboration with principal investigators.

Qualifications

  • Requires Ph.D. in Biological Sciences or related discipline.
  • Three years of specialized experience plus a Master's degree equivalency.
  • Minimum of two years in Molecular Biology, Immunocytochemistry or related field.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialized scientific support including design, planning, conduct and publication of experiments.
  • Maintain accurate daily lab notebooks and records of experiments.
  • Perform complex procedures: cell culture, DNA analysis/isolation/purification/sequencing, flow cytometry, gene cloning and related techniques.
  • Oversee animal work and manage multiple knockout mouse strains under protocol.

Axle is seeking a Biological Scientist to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) located in Bethesda, MD.

Statement of Work Details:
  • Provide specialized scientific support, including participation on the design, planning, conduct, and publication of experiments. – 1
  • Maintain accurate, daily records of experiments and results in pen in bound laboratory notebooks. – 2
  • Perform a wide variety of complex procedures and techniques; cell culture, DNA analysis, DNA isolation, DNA purification, DNA sequencing, flow cytometry, gene cloning, manipulation of radioactive isotopes. – 3
  • Provides technical experience needed to assist in studying the basic principles of plant and animal life.
  • Performs detailed technical analyses including genetic studies and measurement of cellular functional phenotypes of patients.
  • Assists with performing basic laboratory experiments and procedures.
  • Perform clinical and research testing on fresh samples of patients blood for macrophage analysis and fungal assays to help clinical decision making of patients with meningitis.
  • This will include macrophage polarization studies by flow cytometry, macrophage fungal killing assays and ultra-sensitive cerebrospinal fluid fungal colony counts of patients on the day of the lumbar puncture.
  • Prepares, organizes and maintains various lab samples, supplies, and equipment.
  • Interpret, evaluate, and discuss the results of each experiment including the patient sample analysis with the Principal Investigator as part of the planning process for subsequent studies.
  • Oversees animal work in the laboratory including multiple knockout mouse strains generated at considerable cost to the government, conducted under animal LCIM 12E as well as oversees all animal under this protocol.
  • Learns new laboratory techniques and procedures.
  • Review and research the proper handling and methods of utilization for different biological and chemical materials in regular use in the laboratory.
  • Prepare various media, stock supplies and other reagents for use in the laboratory.
