Job description

Overview

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Temporary Services is seeking a Bioinformatician I to perform data management, quality control, data processing, data analysis and other bioinformatics-related tasks on high-dimensional data in coordination with study investigators and other computing and bioinformatics staff in the assigned department. The role supports high quality, reproducible research by selecting applicable bioinformatics tools and technologies and staying current with recent literature and developments to incorporate into analysis protocols and pipelines across sciences and diseases.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
  • Performs data and analysis-related tasks, including processing next-generation sequencing (NGS) data, manipulating common genomic file formats (e.g., FASTQ, SAM, BAM) for NGS experiments, performing quality control for genome-wide association studies (GWAS) or NGS studies, performing downstream analyses, and recommending, creating and maintaining local bioinformatics databases, as well as utilizing public databases. May convert study data to and from common genetic file formats (e.g., PLINK, VCF).
  • Assists with the development of grant applications, presentation of results, and preparation of scientific papers for publication.
  • Participates in formal and informal training activities, monthly journal clubs and grant writing meetings.
  • Maintains knowledge of current changes and developments in bioinformatics through publications, expert consultations, and attending related workshops and conferences.
  • Identifies and resolves technical issues, proposes upgrades to current software, and evaluates new technologies for potential implementation. Interfaces with high-performance computing staff as needed.
  • Provides consultation services and training on bioinformatics concepts, applications and tools.
  • Designs, develops and implements software workflows, pipelines, tools and analytical procedures supporting bioinformatics analysis. Participates in informatics projects involving databases, web applications and other services to support investigators and departmental needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Salary range is $52,555-$68,320

Shift: day shift 8-5 Mon-Fri

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Bioinformatics, Biological Sciences, Computer Science or a related field. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
