Job summary

Mount Sinai Health System is seeking a Medical Interpreter to facilitate communication between LEP patients and healthcare providers. The role involves interpreting for staff, patients and families, and ensuring patient understanding of information.

Requirements include an associate degree, fluency in English and Polish, and 1–3 years hospital interpreting experience. 40-hour medical interpreting training and NBCMI/CCHI certification are preferred.

Qualifications

• Associates degree from an accredited institution.
• Must be fluent in both English and target language.
• 1–3 years interpreting experience in a hospital setting.
• Preferred: bilingual in English and Polish (written and spoken).
• Certification: NBCMI or CCHI preferred; minimum 40 hours of medical interpreter training.

Responsibilities

• Conducts medical and general interpreting for staff, patients and families.
• Assesses and monitors patients understanding of information conveyed.
• Records and monitors interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards.
• Communicates as clearly as possible for both the LEP patient and/or family member and the medical provider.
• Relays information in an accurate and concise manner and does not omit, change or add information.
• Assists LEP in-patients and out-patients and/or family members throughout the medical center.
• May proofread, edit, and/or translate written documents.
• Performs other duties as required.
