Job summary

Lehigh Valley Health Network is seeking an experienced Interpreter to facilitate communication between LEP patients and hospital staff. This role ensures accurate interpretation and culturally sensitive care across services, contributing to safe and effective patient experiences.

Responsibilities include interpreting in real-time, educating staff on cultural considerations, and preserving the integrity of medical records through verbatim interpretation.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• 1 year experience in human or health services.
• Ability to adhere to interpreter standards of practice and code of ethics.
• Ability to interpret and translate daily in potentially stressful situations.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and/or specialized vocabulary.
• Understanding of subject matter to convert source language to target language.
• Foreign language training preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provides accurate interpretation between LEP patients and hospital personnel.
• Provides education to individuals and staff on culturally specific values, beliefs, and practices relevant to the encounter.
• Acts as a conduit of information for clinical services including medical terminology and support services to LEP patients.
• Informs LEP patients about the interpreter's role and what interpreters can and cannot do as part of their jobs.
• Serves as a cultural mediator to enhance communication between patients/family and medical care aspects.
• Explains hospital resources, office protocols, and limitations to clinicians and patients, making appropriate referrals.
• Develops relationships with LEP community focus groups focusing on community needs.
• Provides verbatim interpretation to preserve the medical record and conveys the meaning in the target language.
• Listens effectively and conveys the intent, tone, and language level of the speaker.
