Job summary

BMC Berkeley Medical Center is seeking an Activity Coordinator to provide recreation and leisure activities for patients while coordinating individual and group programs that align with each patient’s plan of care.

The role requires a high school diploma, a minimum of two years’ experience in patient care settings, and preferably a Bachelor’s degree with CTRS certification; EPIC experience is a plus and beneficial for data tracking and documentation.

Qualifications

  • Two (2) years’ experience working as an activity coordinator or as a volunteer coordinator in a patient care setting.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • CTRS certification through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification.
  • Some college and/or knowledge of recreational and therapeutic activities.
  • Previous experience with EPIC software.

Responsibilities

  • Organizes a patient activities program for individuals and groups, based on unit needs and patient well‑being.
  • Plans, organizes, and implements leisure activities (physical, social, religious, creative/expressive, intellectual).
  • Works with unit managers to provide unit‑based leisure activities for patients.
  • Integrates activities into patient plan of care and documents in patient records.
  • Accepts referrals from units and physicians to visit patients.
  • Provides administrative support to the department as needed.
  • Assesses referred patients for leisure interests, needs, and problems.
  • Informs healthcare professionals, family members, and others of activities and responses as indicated.
  • Communicates patient needs/concerns through proper chain of command.
  • Maintains records and documentation.
  • Collects and analyzes program data as needed.
  • Orders supplies and equipment for the Patient Activities program.
  • Assists with budget control and requisitions for supplies.
  • Promotes intradepartmental and interdepartmental relationships.
  • May orient and supervise activity staff and/or volunteers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE:

  • May orient and provide supervision to activity staff and/or volunteers.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position requires a wide range of body motion. Moderate to heavy physical activity may be required. This includes lifting, pushing a loaded cart, and exercise type activities.
  • Able to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for an 11-12 hour shift. Able to lift 40 pounds from floor to waist. Able to ambulate, position, turn and pull up self‑assisting adult patients.
  • May occasionally transport patients.

SKILLS & ABILILTIES:
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to deal with emotional/stressful patient, families, and situations at times.
  • Use a computer keyboard, monitor and mouse and be able to use and apply hospital software programs.
