Job summary

WMCH Weirton Medical Center is seeking a Recreation Specialist to support patient well-being in a long-term care setting. The role involves planning and coordinating activities, transporting patients to events, and providing education and social engagement to adults and seniors.

Candidates must have a high school diploma, BLS within 30 days, and complete WV state-approved recreation specialist training within 6 months.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
  • Completion of recreation specialist training course approved by State of West Virginia within 6 months.

Responsibilities

  • Performs data entry and discharge tracking.
  • Provides care and education appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Maintains an understanding of treatment necessary for each patient and provides appropriate care based on their age specific needs.
  • Maintains communication in a professional manner with patients, families, volunteers, and peers.
  • Attends in-services and participates in staff meetings; plans, implements and evaluates activity program.
  • Coordinates and supervises activities of volunteers and transports patients to activities.
  • Orders supplies and equipment within budget and participates in continuous improvement activities.
  • Develops individualized plan of care with the patient and evaluates progress.

Job description

Provide an ongoing program of activities designed to meet the interests and the physical, mental and psychological well-being of each patient. Discharges duties in a professional manner while demonstrating values of respect, dignity, integrity and compassion. Actions are consistent with hospital policies and procedures and current standards/regulations governing nursing services and long term care.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS** :**
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
  1. High School diploma or equivalent

  2. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

To be completed as established by department: (Administered at Department level)
  1. Completion of recreation specialist training course approved by State of West Virginia within 6 months.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Performs data entry and discharge tracking.

  2. Provides care and education appropriate to the age of the patients served. (Adult 18-79 years, Geriatric 80+ years)

  3. Maintains an understanding of treatment necessary for each patient and provides appropriate care based on their age specific needs.

  4. Maintains communication in a professional manner including, but not limited to:

  • Establishes and maintains good rapport with patients, families, volunteers, and peers.

  • Provides emotional support to patient and family.

  1. Attends in-services and other educational programs as required with special emphasis on programs related to the geriatric patient.
  2. Attends and participates in at least three staff meetings.
  3. Determines areas of self-improvement; writes developmental goals on performance appraisal yearly.
  4. Provides activity in-service program for department.
  5. Reviews and initials meeting minutes and postings in department.
  6. Supports hospital and departmental cost containment efforts.
  7. Plans, implements and evaluates activity program.
  8. Provides individual and group activities which promote the maintenance to enhancement of the patient’s quality of life.
  9. Accurately completes specific areas of the minimum data set (MDS).
  10. Develops individualized plan of care with the patient.
  11. Establishes measurable goals, evaluates plan of care and adjusts plan as needed.
  12. Prepares calendar of activities one month in advance :
  • Activities vary per month with special events each month
  • Activities are posted monthly
  1. Prepares and maintains activity records and reports.
  2. Transports patients to and from activities.
  3. Coordinates and supervises activities of volunteers.
  • Assists in the orientation and development of volunteers for Skilled Care.
  • Coordinates the daily activities and duties of the volunteers.
  1. Orders supplies and equipment for activity program while working within departmental budget.
  2. Participates in continuous improvement activities.
  3. Fosters relationships with community groups and organizations to provide activities for the skilled patient.

  1. This position requires a wide range of body motion. Moderate to heavy physical activity may be required. This includes lifting, pushing a loaded cart, and exercise type activities.

  4. Occasionally transports and carries items of moderate weight.
