Under direct supervision, the Benefits Assistant provides member services and transactional support for the benefits and wellness programs offered by Virginia Beach City Public Schools and the City of Virginia Beach. This position supports routine daily operations within the Office of Consolidated Benefits on functional teams such as compliance, customer service, financial, and wellness programs.

Must possess basic knowledge of employee benefits, related policies, and established procedures, with the ability to follow applicable rules and guidelines. Ability to learn and follow laws and regulations, and procedures related to benefits administration, privacy, and workplace policies. Ability to gather and organize information, perform basic data review, and follow established steps to complete routine tasks. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations with accuracy. Ability to work with others in group settings and assist with occasional presentations. Ability to handle multiple tasks with attention to detail and maintain accurate records. Ability to be patient, clear, and provide supportive customer service, including helping members understand their options or resolve straightforward issues. Demonstrate reliability, confidentiality, and accountability in all work performed. Skilled in operating computers and technical equipment. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact professionally with employees/retirees, team members, and external partners. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), with a willingness to learn additional systems. Ability to work an alternate schedule including overtime, with supervisory approval, to meet operational needs and attend scheduled off-site events.
Required: High School diploma or GED required, and a minimum of two years' experience in benefits administration, public health, human resources, business, or a related field.
Preferred: Experience using HR, payroll, or human capital management systems.
Additional Area Specific Requirements
Financial/Technical: Experience generating standard reports and extracting routine data from enrollment systems, along with a general understanding of basic accounting principles.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have the use of sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with other members and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Frequent sitting, walking, bending, grasping, fingering, repetitive motion, reaching, and driving. Occasional standing, stooping, and crouching. Ability to lift twenty pounds frequently.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Compensation will be based on job-related creditable years of full-time, verified work experience. The entry-level rate will be awarded at the time of hire. Upon the return of employment verification forms from the candidate's current and previous employers, the rate will be adjusted if creditable full-time experience is confirmed.
