Job summary

OSU Cascades Student Life Belonging and Equity seeks a part-time Mentor in Bend, OR to support the Belonging and Community Center. The role focuses on community building, education, and support for students in areas like identity development, leadership, and well-being.

You will work up to 24 hours per week, assist with daily operations, host events, and promote inclusive excellence through training and outreach, under supervision of the Belonging & Equity Coordinator.

Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a program at an eligible institution.
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible.
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in daily operations of The Bridge and/or initiative.
  • Engage in mutual learning on identity development and social justice.
  • Engage in community-specific and collaborative event planning with support of the Belonging & Equity Coordinator.
  • Assist in developing resources, projects, and educational campaigns.
  • Create and maintain a welcoming environment in The Bridge.
  • Support individuals’ connections to community and campus resources.
  • Promote involvement opportunities connected with Student Life’s inclusive excellence programming.
  • Act as a representative of The Bridge and build relationships with student/ community organizations.
  • Attend mandatory trainings and complete FERPA trainings as required.

Job Description:

This recruitment will be used to fill 1 part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Mentor position for the Belonging and Community Center at Oregon State University (OSU).

The Belonging and Community Mentor engages in community building, education, and support on behalf of the Student Life and their inclusive excellence initiatives and programs. Students in this position will focus their support and address the needs of their community in one or more of the following areas:

  • Academic Success
  • Social Justice
  • Leadership
  • Identity Development
  • Community & Belonging
  • Well-being

This position is located in Bend, Oregon.

Position Duties:

  1. Assist in daily operations of The Bridge and/or initiative.
  • For example: giving tours, staffing the front desk, keeping attendance records, maintaining cleanliness and organization of The Bridge Student Center, materials, etc.
  1. Engage oneself and others in mutual learning on identity development and social justice
  • For example: staying current on issues impacting communities; interrupting and educating about bias, microaggressions and other issues impacting communities; raise awareness for underserved parts of the community, etc.
  1. Engage in community-specific and collaborative event planning and leadership with support of the Belonging & Equity Coordinator.
  • For example: history and heritage month celebrations; Cascades Leadership Institute; inclusive excellence workshops/trainings, etc.
  1. Assist in community specific or collaborative development of resources, projects, and initiatives.
  • For example: communication projects such as publications or videos, resource development, distributing promotional materials, educational campaigns, etc.
  1. Assist in creating and maintaining a welcoming environment in The Bridge.
  • For example: greeting guests, aiding the Belonging & Equity Coordinator in addressing community conflicts, identify ways to make the space more inclusive, etc.
  1. Support individuals’ connections to community.
  • For example: outreach to students, helping guests build relationships with each other, providing supportive listening, assisting guests in finding relevant resources, etc.
  1. Contribute to a culture of respect and accountability.
  • For example: engaging in and modeling self-reflection, learning, and personal and professional growth, etc.
  1. Promote involvement opportunities connected with Student Life’s inclusive excellence programming.
  • For example: promoting hiring and volunteer opportunities, involvement opportunities in affiliated student organizations, participation in programming, etc.
  1. Engage with peers and connect them to relevant campus and community resources to support their student experience.
  • For example: Academic Advising, Library services, Cascades Edge, student Clubs & Organizations, etc.
  1. Act as a representative of the The Bridge.
  • For example: building relationships with student / community organizations Tribal communities, and other OSU-Cascades departments/programs; serving on planning committees for campus events as needed.

Other responsibilities as assigned by professional staff

  1. Attend mandatory scheduled trainings
  • Such as ongoing training sessions, weekly staff meetings, and other professional development.
  1. Obtain FERPA certification and complete necessary trainings in a timely manner.
  1. Complete daily center tasks & needs as identified by staff
  • May also involve focusing efforts on specialized projects based on needs of the center and/or initiative.
  1. May occasionally require evening and weekend hours.

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by Office of International Services, and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions (as per Voluntary and Compulsory Driver Standards OSU Standard 125-155-0200) as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000 et seq.
