Position Purpose

Provides direct clinical services to patients, families, and significant others in the Emergency Department. Based on clinical assessments and considering age-specific, developmental, and cultural needs, makes recommendations to physicians regarding appropriate service needs. Collaborates with physicians, nursing staff, and other providers to facilitate appropriate services. May also provide short-term, focused clinical treatment services.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Provides clinical services including mental health and chemical dependency evaluations, crisis intervention, supportive counseling, and referrals.
• Offers supportive intervention for distress, illnesses, trauma, and supports survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, abuse, and neglect.
• Educates patients and families about medical and mental health issues.
• Assists ED staff with complex patient assessments using clinical techniques such as crisis intervention.
• Prepares documentation of all services provided.
• Facilitates entry of patients into Behavioral Services by evaluating symptoms, analyzing history, and making care level recommendations.
• Obtains informed consents and legally required documents for admissions.
• Collaborates with Patient Financial Services for insurance verification and benefits.
• Responsible for pre-authorizations for Behavioral Health Services admissions.

Additional Responsibilities

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in social work, psychology, psychiatric nursing, or counseling.
• Licensing appropriate to the profession.

• Clinical and analytical skills for behavioral health needs assessment, including risk evaluation.
