Position Purpose

Provides direct clinical services to patients, families, and significant others in the Emergency Department. Based on clinical assessments and considering age-specific, developmental, and cultural needs, makes recommendations to physicians regarding appropriate services. Collaborates with physicians, nursing staff, and other providers to facilitate service initiation. May also provide short-term, focused clinical treatment services.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

1. Provides clinical services including mental health and chemical dependency evaluations, crisis intervention, supportive counseling, and referrals.
2. Offers supportive intervention for distress, illnesses, trauma, and supports survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, abuse, and neglect.
3. Provides education to patients and families about relevant medical and mental health issues.
4. Assists ED staff with complex patient assessments using clinical techniques like crisis intervention.
5. Prepares documentation for all services, including evaluations, contacts, and disposition plans.
6. Facilitates entry into Behavioral Services by evaluating patients, analyzing symptoms with DSMV, and recommending care levels.
7. Obtains informed consents and legal documents for admissions.
8. Collaborates with Patient Financial Services for insurance verification and benefits.
9. Handles pre-authorizations for behavioral health admissions within SJMHS.

Other Responsibilities

Performs other duties as assigned.
