Job description

We are hiring a casual Behavioral Health Navigator I position to support UPMC McKeesport!

The Behavioral Health Navigator I is responsible for the assessment and navigation of patients and families in collaboration with attending psychiatrists and other staff within the UPMC McKeesport Emergency Department. They will develop initial treatment plans to facilitate disposition planning and assist with bed placement or disposition planning. They will have the ability to identify acuity level of patient and will facilitate the flow of information to promote effective communication regarding patient care, operations, and disposition.

The incumbent will work two 8-hour shifts every 2 weeks. They will also be required to work 2 holidays per year, including 1 major holiday.

Responsibilities:
  1. Complete all required documentation and paperwork, including psychiatric evaluations and commitment paperwork.
  2. Utilize DSMV for provisional diagnoses.
  3. Understand mental health laws and ensure accuracy in inpatient commitments.
  4. Knowledgeable about insurance processes and obtaining authorizations.
  5. Participate in interdisciplinary activities and maintain competency requirements.
  6. Use up-to-date technology for patient care, assessment, and referral planning.
  7. Handle a high volume of calls efficiently and follow outpatient scheduling guidelines.
  8. Respond quickly to appointment or admission requests.
  9. Review and summarize patient information for behavioral health admissions and triage.
  10. Present cases verbally to physicians and others.
  11. Demonstrate triage and assessment skills for medical necessity.
  12. Provide accurate, timely information to coworkers, physicians, and outside agencies.
  13. Access social systems and provide resource-specific information to patients and families, facilitating referrals.
