A leading company specializing in cancer-specific behavioral health treatment is seeking a Behavioral Health Care Manager. This role includes providing evidence-based treatments to oncology patients through telehealth, collaborating closely with oncology teams, and engaging in continuous professional development. The ideal candidate will possess a strong mental health background and experience with chronic health conditions.
About Protocol Behavioral Health
Protocol provides cancer-specific behavioral health treatment to patients by partnering with oncology clinics and cancer centers. Oncology patients are at heightened risk of mental health disorders and suicide, and those conditions negatively impact patient outcomes, treatment adherence, and total cost of care. Our approach is designed to meet patients where they are—emotionally, logistically, and financially. We deliver high-quality mental health support for cancer patients using the collaborative care model, integrated directly into oncology treatment centers.
How We Solve the Biggest Barriers:
Increasing Capacity
We train and support behavioral health care managers to specialize in psycho-oncology, addressing the supply gap and building a sustainable, expert workforce.
Improving Access
By partnering with oncology clinics, we embed behavioral health services into the patient care flow. Patients are referred directly by their providers and connected to experts who understand cancer-specific challenges.
Enhancing Affordability
Care is billed through the oncology practice using patients’ existing insurance—eliminating the high out-of-pocket fees typically associated with private behavioral health providers.
Maximizing Convenience
We deliver care via secure telehealth, reducing the need for extra clinic visits and making support available no matter where patients live.
About the role
The Behavioral Health Care Manager (BHCM) is responsible for providing evidence-based treatment (e.g., cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy among others) to patients with cancer via a Collaborative Care Model partnership with oncology clinics. The BHCM is responsible for treatment delivery via telehealth (video and phone), documentation and communication with oncology teams, consultation with the Protocol consulting psychiatrist, maintenance of the patient registry, and ongoing assessment of patient progress.
Responsibilities
Conduct structured assessments of mental and behavioral health and functioning of oncology patients referred by partner cancer centers and clinics.
Develop treatment plans based on assessment results using Protocol’s evidence-based modular treatment approach.
Implement treatment modules and conduct ongoing progress assessment to guide next steps in care and make changes as indicated by patient progress.
Maintain a patient registry aligned with requirements of the Collaborative Care Model.
Participate in weekly consultation meetings with Protocol’s consulting psychiatrist
Communicate and collaborate with oncology teams about patient progress and recommendations and attend care coordination meetings as needed.
Maintain a patient caseload targeting 65% patient-facing time.
Participate in initial and ongoing training required by Protocol.
Utilize between-session messaging as indicated to support patients.
Engage in ongoing supervision and department meetings.
(If licensed) maintain licensure in home state and obtain licensure in other states as requested by Protocol (licensure costs will be covered by Protocol).
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Active, unrestricted, and independent license to provide mental health treatment from at least one US state. Will consider pre-licensed candidates for Pacific and Mountain time zones.
Ability to support a caseload of patients of different diagnoses, backgrounds and cultures, and with varying degrees of acuity.
Ability to deliver care in a virtual setting.
Experience with patients with oncology and/or chronic/serious medical conditions.
Experience supporting patients with suicidal ideation and/or trauma.
Plus if certified proficient for practice in Spanish.
Benefits
Extensive training in evidence-based treatment modules for cancer patients and ongoing consultation and professional development opportunities aligned with psycho-oncology care. Malpractice insurance covered by Protocol Behavioral Health.
This role is a contract role. Total hours per week and working days/hours will be discussed individually to meet patient needs for Protocol’s partnerships with cancer centers.
