Job summary

The Connecticut Humane Society is seeking a Behavior Coordinator for the Wilton/Newington area to develop and implement behavior modification and enrichment plans for dogs, cats, and other animals. This full-time, hourly role supports adopters and shelter staff to improve animal welfare and successful placements.

You'll lead training for volunteers and staff, oversee safety assessments, and collaborate with leadership to continuously enhance behavior programs in a busy shelter environment.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in animal science or related field.
• 2–5 years of experience in animal behavior.
• Knowledge and hands-on experience in animal handling.
• Proficiency with computer and database systems.
• Ability to perform physical requirements: lifting up to 40 pounds, standing, bending, etc.
• Ability to work a weekend schedule.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement behavior modification and enrichment plans for dogs, cats, and other animals.
• Identify behavioral needs and manage challenging cases for alternative placement.
• Provide training, guidance, coaching to staff.
• Oversee SAFER testing and handling assessments.
• Ensure consistent use of behavior and training protocols.

As our Behavior Coordinator, you’ll play a vital role in preparing animals for successful adoptions and improving their quality of life while they are in our care.

• Create and lead training sessions for volunteers and staff, including animal handling and dog-walking techniques.
• Collaborate with shelter leadership and the broader team to continuously improve animal behavior and enrichment programs.
