Job summary

YMCA of Greater Seattle seeks BASE instructors to guide elementary students in sports, arts, STEM, and hands‑on learning. You’ll foster teamwork, social-emotional growth, and skill-building in a safe, engaging environment outside the classroom.

The BASE program runs before and after school; positions start 8/24 at multiple elementary sites. Hours vary by location, with a typical day from 6:45am to after school. Full access to YMCA benefits and resources is provided.

Qualifications

• 1-2 years’ experience with children; camps, childcare, tutoring, or nannying.
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of minimum STARS training; CPR/First Aid training preferred.
• Pre-employment TB tests and MMR vaccination required.
• Background check through MERIT statewide registry.

• Implements culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate activities within YMCA curriculum.
• Supervises a group of children to ensure health and safety and a positive experience.

In this role, you will guide elementary age participants through sports, arts, STEM, and other hands‑on learning activities at a Y Before and After‑School Enrichment (BASE) program which is designed to provide a safe and caring place for students outside of the classroom. You will help teach teamwork and social emotional learning to kids as they grow and learn all while encouraging skill building, creative exploration, physical activity, and most of all, fun.

BASE instructors will start 8/24.

Hiring for the following Locations

Carriage Crest Elementary, Fairwood Elementary, Panther Lake Elementary, Ridgewood Elementary, Sunrise Elementary

This is a Part‑Time Onsite Position.

Hours Vary by School/Location: Monday – Friday 6:45am – Start of School; Monday – Friday End of School – 6pm

The Y provides full day programming on non‑school days and early release days.

MMR Vaccination Required

Licensed School Age Programs require Mumps, Measles and Rubella immunization in accordance with Department of Children, Youth and Family requirements.

Responsibilities

What you’ll be doing

• Implements culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate activities within the curriculum in accordance with the Youth Development goals of the YMCA.
• Supervises a group of children to ensure their health and safety and to provide for a positive experience for each child.
• May provide guidance to staff/volunteers overseeing the activities of groups of children.
• Professionally communicates day-to-day, confidential and evaluative information with parents/guardians.
• Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergency procedures.
• Assists in maintaining developmentally appropriate site including appearance, décor and cleanliness of site.
• May prepare and serve snacks. Cleans snack area.
• Attends staff meetings and trainings as required.
• Other duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.

Qualifications

What we’re looking for in an applicant

• 16 years of age or older, 18 or older is preferred.
• 1-2 years’ experience with children; camps, childcare, tutoring, or nannying.
• Ability to model and demonstrate Y values: caring, respect, responsibility and honesty.
• Experience planning and implementing group activities.
• We require pre‑employment TB tests and MMR vaccination. To make this process convenient for our new hires, we offer Concentra options at no cost to you.
• High school diploma or equivalent, or be currently enrolled in high school or an equivalent education program.
• Completion of minimum STARS required training, CPR/First Aid Training*
• Cleared Portable Background Check in the statewide registry MERIT.** At hire, or earliest possible training (but no later than 30 days after employment.) **At hire, or during onboarding for position.

• Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.).
• Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
