Job summary

Seattle YMCA is recruiting a part-time BASE instructor at Lakeland Hills Elementary to guide elementary students through sports, arts, STEM and hands-on learning. You will foster teamwork, social-emotional learning and healthy activity while ensuring a safe, caring program outside the classroom.

Hours vary by school; typically 6:45am start and 6pm wrap, with full-day programming on non-school days. You’ll work with a team, follow YMCA policies, support families, and help maintain a welcoming

Qualifications

• Candidates must be 16 years of age or older and have 1–2 years experience with children in camps, childcare, tutoring or similar settings.
• Demonstrated ability to model YMCA values: caring, respect, responsibility and honesty.

Responsibilities

• Implements developmentally appropriate activities within the curriculum.
• Supervises a group of children to ensure safety and positive experiences.
• May guide staff/volunteers and communicate with parents/guardians daily.
• Follows YMCA policies including medical, safety, and discipline procedures.
• Maintains the site’s appearance, decor, and cleanliness.
• Assists with snacks and meal setup as needed.
• Attends staff meetings and trainings; performs other duties as assigned.

In this role, you will guide elementary age participants through sports, arts, STEM, and other hands-on learning activities at a Y Before and After-School Enrichment (BASE) program which is designed to provide a safe and caring place for students outside of the classroom. You will help teach teamwork and social emotional learning to kids as they grow and learn all while encouraging skill building, creative exploration, physical activity, and most of all, fun.

BASE instructors will start 8/24.

*This is a Part-Time Onsite Position.

Hours Vary by School/Location:
Monday – Friday 6:45am – Start of School
Monday – Friday End of School – 6pm

The Y provides full day programming on non-school days and early release days.

Responsibilities

What you'll be doing

• Implements culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate activities within the curriculum in accordance with the Youth Development goals of the YMCA.


• Supervises a group of children to ensure their health and safety and to provide for a positive experience for each child.


• May provide guidance to staff/volunteers overseeing the activities of groups of children.


• Professionally communicates day-to-day, confidential and evaluative information with parents/guardians.


• Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergency procedures.


• Assists in maintaining developmentally appropriate site including appearance, décor and cleanliness of site.


• May prepare and serve snacks. Cleans snack area.


• Attends staff meetings and trainings as required.


• Other duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.

Qualifications

What we're looking for in an applicant

• 16 years of age or older, 18 or older is preferred.


• 1-2 years’ experience with children; camps, childcare, tutoring, or nannying.


• Ability to model and demonstrate Y values: caring, respect, responsibility and honesty.


• Experience planning and implementing group activities.

• High school diploma or equivalent, or be currently enrolled in high school or an equivalent education program.


• Completion of minimum STARS required training, CPR/First Aid Training*


• Cleared Portable Background Check in the statewide registry MERIT.**
  *At hire, or earliest possible training (but no later than 30 days after employment.)
  **At hire, or during onboarding for position.

• Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.).
