Job summary

Habitat for Humanity Portland Region is seeking a part-time, hourly non-exempt Store Associate to support day-to-day retail operations. The role involves customer service, cashiering, donation processing, and volunteer guidance in a busy ReStore environment.

You will join a team committed to equitable practices and community impact, with a focus on safety, efficiency, and friendly customer interactions in the Portland region. Shift flexibility and teamwork are essential.

Who You Are:

You are responsible for working with the store’s team members and volunteers to manage all aspects of day-to-day retail operations as needed and directed by leadership. A typical shift involves loading and unloading vehicles, guiding volunteers, cashiering, and providing customer service. Store Associates are expected to perform all tasks safely, efficiently, and effectively, and to use polite and respectful communication with co-workers, volunteers, and customers. This position requires energy and motivation as well as a connection to the Habitat mission.

You’ll be responsible for:
  • Customer service excellence, including greeting and assisting customers, loading and measuring items, answering questions, and cashiering
  • Greet donors, accept and inspect donations that meet our criteria, and decline those that do not
  • Guide volunteers to ensure they are supported in completing tasks assigned by team members
  • Process and price donations
  • Stock merchandise on the sales floor
  • Clean and organize the store, including receiving areas, break rooms, restrooms, and outdoor areas
  • Assist donation pick-up drivers with residential and business pickups as needed; this can be included in the team member's weekly schedule
  • Engage customers, donors, and community members in Habitat's mission by sharing events, details of Habitat builds, volunteer opportunities, and inviting them to participate in donation round-up initiatives.
  • Support other ReStore locations as needed
To be successful in this role, you possess:
  • One year of customer service experience
  • Skill of working in a team with staff and volunteers, following the lead and direction of leadership
  • Ability and desire to maintain a clean and organized work environment
  • Time management skills, including managing donation flow urgency and timely arrival for shifts
  • Ability, or willingness to learn, to correctly and safely use tools and equipment, such as a forklift, pallet jack, and dolly
  • Knowledge of, and desire to follow, safety requirements as well as the ability to ensure that store team members do the same
  • Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, communication tools, such as telephone, email, and 2-way radio
  • Ability to adapt to a changing work environment, and learn new operations skills as the program develops

  • Any qualifying combination of education, certification, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish
Your work environment and physical demands:
  • You will spend your workday in an open warehouse and retail environment.
  • Assisting customers and handling donations is very active and requires consistent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing.
  • This means you will frequently lift, move, and/or load items over 50 pounds with mechanical or co-worker assistance.
Your Work Schedule:
  • 20-29 hours a week, including Saturday and Sunday availability.
  • Current store hours: Wednesday – Monday 10am-6pm, Tuesday 11 am – 2 pm.
  • Shifts may be scheduled to accompany donation pick-ups, providing a variety of work experiences.
  • Your assigned store location may occasionally change temporarily for training or support purposes; however, these changes are rare and will remain within the Portland region.
Your Compensation:

We determine the best possible compensation offer based on base qualifications, relevant experience, internal equity, and the candidate’s competencies for the role demonstrated during the hiring process. Successful candidates are typically hired within the first half of the Pay Range and receive scheduled incremental increases. When starting in this position, your compensation will generally be between $17.34 per hour to $20.61 per hour. The full range for this position is $17.34 per hours to $24.28 per hour.

What to expect when you apply:
