Responsibilities

• Lead daily Beam Weld Department operations to meet safety, quality, delivery, cost, and productivity goals.
• Review schedules, priorities, tools, and equipment to meet customer/shipping requirements.
• Coordinate beam weld cells, changeovers, inspection, material handling, and supporting ops.
• Monitor output, cycle times, downtime, scrap, and adjust actions to stay on plan.
• Verify proper setup and operation of welding equipment, fixtures, and conveyors.
• Ensure welds meet drawings and customer quality standards; oversee first-piece and in-process inspections.
• Investigate defects with Quality/Engineering and implement corrective actions.
• Coordinate with Maintenance to prioritize breakdowns and preventive maintenance.
• Plan and manage tool/changeovers to minimize downtime and ensure safe returns to production.

Beam Weld Supervisor

Job Summary

Responsible for the safe, efficient, and quality-focused operation of the Beam Weld Department during the assigned shift. Directs department personnel and oversees beam welding production activities to ensure customer requirements, production schedules, quality specifications, and labor objectives are met. Coordinates beam components, weld cells, changeovers, material flow, and departmental resources to maximize equipment utilization and schedule attainment. Works closely with Production Planning, Maintenance, Engineering, Quality, and other manufacturing departments to improve process performance and support continuous improvement.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Lead and direct daily Beam Weld Department operations to achieve safety, quality, delivery, cost, and productivity objectives.
• Review the production schedule, order priorities, staffing, component availability, tooling, and equipment condition; sequence work and adjust priorities to meet customer and shipping requirements.
• Assign and coordinate employees across beam weld cells, setup and changeover activities, inspection, repair, material handling, and supporting operations to maintain efficient workflow.
• Monitor hourly output, schedule attainment, machine utilization, cycle time, labor performance, downtime, scrap, rework, and work-in-process; initiate corrective action when results are off plan.
• Verify proper setup, changeover, and operation of automated or manual beam welding equipment, fixtures, tooling, conveyors, and supporting systems.
• Ensure beam assemblies meet approved drawings, weld requirements, dimensional specifications, and customer quality standards, including proper connector placement and finished beam configuration.
• Confirm operators perform required first-piece and in-process inspections, complete production documentation, and promptly identify and contain nonconforming product.
• Partner with Quality and Engineering to investigate weld defects, dimensional issues, fit-up concerns, and repeat nonconformances; implement and verify corrective actions.
• Coordinate with Maintenance to prioritize breakdowns, document recurring equipment issues, complete operator care expectations, and support preventive maintenance and equipment reliability.
• Plan and manage product and tooling changeovers to minimize lost time, confirm correct components and settings, and return equipment to production safely and efficiently.
• Lead shift-start and routine floor communication covering safety concerns, production priorities, quality alerts, staffing, component shortages, downtime, and performance expectations.
• Train, coach, and develop employees on safe work practices, standardized work, equipment setup and operation, weld quality requirements, inspection, and problem solving.
• Maintain cross-training plans and qualified coverage for critical beam weld positions, setups, inspections, and repair activities.
• Ensure compliance with required PPE, machine guarding, lockout/tagout, hot-work controls, welding fume controls, material-handling practices, and all applicable safety and environmental requirements.
• Investigate safety incidents, near misses, quality events, and production interruptions; identify root causes and ensure assigned corrective actions are completed.
• Support Lean Manufacturing, 5S, standardized work, visual management, waste reduction, and continuous improvement activities within the department.
• Maintain accurate shift documentation, including production quantities, downtime, changeover performance, scrap, staffing, training, quality concerns, and pass-down information for the next shift.
• Coordinate with Production Planning, Roll Forming, Maintenance, Engineering, Quality, Paint, Shipping, and other departments to maintain component availability and finished beam flow.
• Administer company policies, attendance expectations, work rules, and applicable labor agreement provisions consistently and fairly.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe department and ensure good housekeeping practices are sustained throughout the shift.

• Maintain regular, reliable and punctual attendance at the worksite for the duration of scheduled shifts, including required overtime

Qualifications

Education and Experience

• Minimum 7 years experience in Manufacturing with 5 years in a Supervisory position

Skills and Abilities

• Requires the ability to solve math problems (addition, subtractions, multiplication, and division)
• Fluent in written and oral English and the ability to effectively communicate to others
• Organizational skills including knowledge of production schedules
• The ability to type using a personal computer to complete daily, weekly, and/or monthly reports
• General knowledge of Six Sigma concepts, Lean Manufacturing concepts, and ISO or QS 9000
• Working knowledge of robotic and automated welding systems
• Ability to interpret production schedules, welding specifications, and engineering drawings
• Experience leading union-represented manufacturing employees
• Strong understanding of overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), throughput management, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement methodologies

This position primarily operates in a professional office setting. This role may occasionally travel for business purposes.

• Work Schedule:
  • The standard work schedule is Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. with occasional evening or weekend work as needed to meet deadlines or attend events
