Job summary

Weber Specialties Company is seeking an experienced welder to join our manufacturing team. The role requires reading blueprints, setting up welding equipment, and performing arc welds to exact specifications.

You will preheat, clamp, and post-weld clean parts, while ensuring adherence to safety policies and quality standards. Applicants should have five years of welding experience or an equivalent combination of education and hands-on work.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five years welding experience or an equivalent combination of metallurgical education and welding experience.
  • Ability to read general instructions, blueprints, and operator specifications.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and PPE usage.
  • Experience with arc welding and applying filler material.

Responsibilities

  • Welds metal components using arc-welding equipment and follows blueprints or specifications.
  • Maintains control of arc length and travel speed to ensure proper fusion and bead quality.
  • Preheats, positions, clamps, and tack-welds parts; performs post-weld cleaning and minor repairs.
  • Completes shop floor paperwork and adheres to safety and quality procedures.

Description
Summary
  • Welds together metal components of products with electric arc-welding equipment by performing the following duties. This position may require overtime to include weekends. Regular attendance at work is a requirement of this position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Reads blueprint, job specification or operator instructions for product specifications and quantity required.
  • Obtains specified electrode and inserts electrode into portable holder or threads consumable electrode wire through portable welding gun.
  • Connects cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse.
  • Starts power supply to produce electric current.
  • Strikes (forms) arc which generates heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to workpiece and join edges of workpiece. Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle.
  • Welds in flat, horizontal, or vertical, or positions. Examines weld for bead size and other specifications. Applies filler rod manually to supply weld metal.
  • Cleans or degreases weld joint or workpiece. Repairs broken or cracked parts and fills holes. Prepares broken parts for welding by grooving or scarfing surfaces.
  • Chips off excess weld, slag, and spatter.
  • Preheats workpiece with hand torch or heating furnace.
  • Positions and clamps workpieces together or assembles them in jig or fixture. Tacks assemblies together.
  • Completes statistical process control (SPC) charts in accordance with in-process inspection instructions using instruments such as micrometers, caliper, tape measures and gauges to check parts.
  • Complies with all safety procedures per Company Safety Manual and utilizes job safety devices. Shuts down machinery and does not operate if job is unsafe.
  • Accurately completes all shop floor paperwork including production release, routing sheets, product identification and electronic time sheet.
  • Communicates with material handler and supervisor as necessary to ensure availability of proper materials to do job.
  • Participates in continuous improvement activities, including ability to work in a team environment.
  • May be required to work off shifts as needed.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum five years welding experience; or equivalent combination of metallurgical education and welding experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
COMPUTER SKILLS
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Design software.
