Job summary

Speedrack Products Group in Quincy Plant seeks a Beam Mill Supervisor to oversee the Beam Mill Department during the assigned shift, ensuring safe, efficient operations, quality and on-time production.

You will coordinate material flow, tooling, changeovers, and cross-functional collaboration with Planning, Maintenance, Engineering, Quality, and other departments to meet customer specifications and schedules.

Beam Mill Supervisor

Job Summary

Responsible for the safe, efficient, and quality-focused operation of the Beam Mill Department at the Quincy Plant during the assigned shift. Directs department personnel and oversees roll-forming production activities to ensure customer requirements, production schedules, dimensional specifications, and labor objectives are met. Coordinates raw material, tooling, mill setups, changeovers, material flow, and departmental resources to maximize equipment utilization and schedule attainment. Works closely with Production Planning, Maintenance, Engineering, Quality, Beam Weld, Paint, Shipping, and other manufacturing departments to improve process performance and support continuous improvement.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Lead and direct daily Beam Mill Department operations to achieve safety, quality, delivery, cost, and productivity objectives
• Review the production schedule, order priorities, staffing, raw material availability, tooling readiness, and equipment condition; sequence work and adjust priorities to meet customer and shipping requirements
• Assign and coordinate employees across beam mills, setup and changeover activities, inspection, material handling, packaging, and supporting operations to maintain efficient workflow
• Monitor hourly output, schedule attainment, machine utilization, cycle time, labor performance, downtime, scrap, rework, and work-in-process; initiate corrective action when results are off plan
• Verify proper setup, changeover, and operation of beam roll-forming mills, dies, rolls, punches, cutoff equipment, straighteners, conveyors, and supporting systems
• Ensure formed beam components meet approved drawings and specifications, including profile dimensions, hole and slot patterns, cut length, straightness, camber, twist, surface condition, and material identification
• Confirm operators perform required first-piece and in-process inspections, complete production documentation, and promptly identify and contain nonconforming product
• Partner with Quality and Engineering to investigate dimensional variation, tooling wear, forming defects, material concerns, and repeat nonconformances; implement and verify corrective actions
• Coordinate with Maintenance to prioritize breakdowns, document recurring equipment issues, complete operator care expectations, and support preventive maintenance and equipment reliability
• Plan and manage product, tooling, and coil changeovers to minimize lost time, confirm correct material and settings, and return equipment to production safely and efficiently
• Ensure proper handling, staging, identification, and inventory control of coils, formed beam sections, tooling, and work-in-process
• Lead shift-start and routine floor communication covering safety concerns, production priorities, quality alerts, staffing, material shortages, downtime, and performance expectations
• Train, coach, and develop employees on safe work practices, standardized work, mill setup and operation, dimensional inspection, material handling, and problem solving
• Maintain cross-training plans and qualified coverage for critical mill positions, setups, inspections, coil handling, and material movement
• Ensure compliance with required PPE, machine guarding, lockout/tagout, crane and powered industrial truck practices, coil-handling requirements, pinch-point controls, and all applicable safety and environmental requirements
• Investigate safety incidents, near misses, quality events, and production interruptions; identify root causes and ensure assigned corrective actions are completed
• Support Lean Manufacturing, 5S, standardized work, visual management, waste reduction, setup reduction, and continuous improvement activities within the department
• Maintain accurate shift documentation, including production quantities, downtime, changeover performance, scrap, staffing, training, quality concerns, and pass-down information for the next shift
• Coordinate with Production Planning, Maintenance, Engineering, Quality, Beam Weld, Paint, Shipping, and other departments to maintain material availability and downstream production flow
• Administer company policies, attendance expectations, work rules, and applicable labor agreement provisions consistently and fairly
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe department and ensure good housekeeping practices are sustained throughout the shift
• Maintain general housekeeping and orderly work area(s)
• Maintain regular, reliable and punctual attendance at the worksite for the duration of scheduled shifts, including required overtime
• Understand and comply with all company policies, procedures, rules and standards
• Maintain professional, cooperative, respectful and ethical conduct when interacting with coworkers, customers, vendors and the public

Qualifications

Education and Experience

• Minimum 7 years experience in Manufacturing with 5 years in a Supervisory position

Skills and Abilities

• Ability to solve practical math problems, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, fractions, and dimensional conversions
• Fluent in written and oral English and the ability to effectively communicate to others
• Organizational skills including knowledge of production schedules, staffing plans and material priorities
• The ability to type using a personal computer to complete daily, weekly, and/or monthly reports
• General knowledge of Six Sigma concepts, Lean Manufacturing concepts, and ISO or QS 9000
• Working knowledge of roll-forming mills, tooling, dies, punches, cutoff systems, coil handling, and related automated equipment
• Ability to interpret production schedules, engineering drawings, dimensional tolerances, inspection requirements, and work instructions
• Experience leading union-represented manufacturing employees
• Strong understanding of overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), throughput management, changeover reduction, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement methodologies

Working Conditions

This position primarily operates in a manufacturing environment with regular exposure to moving equipment, noise, metalworking processes, oils and material-handling activity. The role also performs administrative work in an office setting and may occasionally travel for business purposes.

• Physical Requirements:
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, reach, bend and use hands to handle tools, documents and equipment controls
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Must be able to safely access production equipment and move throughout the manufacturing area
  • Ability to operate office equipment

  • Evening, weekend and overtime work may be required
  • Work schedules may vary based on position and department needs
  • Travel: up to 10%
