Job description

This is a skilled position responsible for maintaining all aspects of the City’s beach. Day-to-day activities are largely performed independently, requiring a strong work ethic. General responsibilities include performing maintenance tasks such as trash removal, beach raking, walkway cleaning, and implementing the City’s Leave No Trace Ordinance. The position also involves planning, carrying out, and overseeing walkover construction projects and beach vegetation projects.

The individual in this position must maintain a professional working relationship with the City’s turtle nesting surveyors, communicate beach-related issues and recommendations to superiors, and perform other tasks as assigned.

The selected candidate must complete a pre-employment drug screen, background check, FMCSA Clearinghouse query, and DOT Certification physical examination.

1. Assists with planning, scheduling, and implementing construction, maintenance, and operation activities to keep the City’s beach aesthetically pleasing and welcoming.
2. Maintains the Leave No Trace Ordinance by removing or tagging items left on the beach, discarding trash, filling holes, knocking down sandcastles, and educating the public about wildlife as appropriate.
3. Removes waste and recyclables from the beach and parking lots.
4. Ensures the cleanliness and maintenance of the beach trail, walkovers, and Sunset Beach boardwalk.
5. Maintains beach vegetation, including raking, sanitizing, removing invasive species, and planting native species, with duties including vegetation monitoring.
6. Reports wildlife concerns to appropriate agencies.
7. Coordinates beach clean-up efforts after storm events, red tide, and during events and holidays.
8. Oversees and reports on beach renourishment activities and escarpment maintenance.
9. Ensures personal safety and the safety of all crew members.
10. Maintains and inspects equipment, tools, and vehicles regularly.
11. Operates trucks and various equipment.
12. Assists in record-keeping and in preparing the beach for events, including maintaining the mobi-mat.
13. Inspects structures for defects and assists in capital planning.
14. Performs minor electrical, painting, power washing, carpentry, and masonry work.
15. Orders parts and maintains documentation.

Employees may be required to perform other duties as needed.

Minimum Requirements:

• Must be 18 years or older.
• High school diploma or GED required.
• Five (5) years of experience in Public Works or construction trade.
• Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
• Equivalent education, training, and experience considered.

Additional skills include instructing and evaluating personnel, establishing effective relationships, acting as Crew Chief, responding to after-hours calls, adhering to work schedules, and effective communication skills. Knowledge of modern municipal infrastructure maintenance techniques is also required.
